A different kind of Halloween

I was asked to photograph a new event this year… the Edina HalloBoo. Basically, because of Covid-19 and kids trick-or-treating all but cancelled, the City of Edina created this trick-or-treat-by-car event to make sure kids still had a chance to wear their costumes, but more importantly, to get lots of candy and cavities. At first, I had all sorts of thoughts in my head about shooting this event at night and using a simple remote flash on the ground to get dramatic shadows, but this was a daytime event and parents and kids were to stay in cars and remain socially distanced. So instead, I realized it was an event not about the kids and costumes, but how a community came together to adjust to trying times and preserve an age-old tradition. Each car had a card posted on their windshield showing how many kids were inside. And at each of the sponsored stations each child received a prepackaged goodie bag. The images I captured were so sweet and the smiles on the kids faces were no less gigantic than if they went door-to-door. What a wonderful event. Shout out to all the event sponsors and organizers who put forth the effort to make this event such a success.
